Step inside one of the region’s most fascinating industrial heritage sites and discover how traditional flour milling continues today at Queen’s Mill Castleford.
Visitors can see the historic breastshot waterwheel, designed by renowned engineer John Smeaton, and learn how the mill still produces wholemeal flour using its impressive grinding stones. At its peak, Queen’s Mill boasted more grinding stones than any other stone-ground flour mill in Europe, and possibly the world!
History talks will take place at 11am and 2pm, exploring the story of the mill, the healthy eating principles championed by Dr Allinson, and the surprising role the electric lightbulb played in Queen’s Mill’s history.
Children’s activities and refreshments will be available throughout the day.
Please note there is one step up to the waterwheel viewing platform. Talks are on the ground floor with level access, and the milling floor is accessible by lift.
