About

In summer this year, the Friends of Castleford Library worked with artist and photographer, Bob Clayden, to run a creative workshop with local participants who gained new skills in how to make and take photographs using a DIY pin hole camera. The creators learned how to make a camera from a recycled baby milk can, calibrate the camera, take the shot and then go on to develop their images.

As part of Our Year – Wakefield District 2024, the group wanted to capture local heritage buildings around Castleford. Creators made photographs reflecting the changes in the Castleford landscape and regeneration, recording the buildings which are to be demolished.

The images they produced are unique and show a fascinating effect what a camera of rudimentary design can produce. You can see the resulting photographs in a fantastic exhibition at Castleford Library, A Pin Hole Shot of Castleford, throughout November 2024.

This project was supported with a Culture Grant by Wakefield Council as part of Our Year—Wakefield District 2024.
