About

Brave the January cold and head over to Sandal Castle to find out why the castle is best known for the role it played in the Battle of Wakefield in 1460 during the Wars of the Roses, where Richard, Duke of York was killed. Remains of the 13th century stone castle and the fine motte and bailey can still be seen today. Climb the steps to the top of the motte and marvel at the stunning panoramic views of the Calder Valley. Have a relaxing stroll around the grounds and learn about the rich heritage of the site on this unique tour led by Ian Downes from the Wakefield Museums & Castles‘ team.

To mark the launch of Our Year – Wakefield District 2024, Wakefield Council is hosting 24 in 24, a celebration which will see 24 events take place on one jampacked day and bringing communities together.

Taking place across each ward of the Wakefield district on Saturday 13th January 2024, 24 in 24 will be a taste of what’s to come throughout Our Year’s 366-day programme of activity.
