Come celebrate the launch of Alice Gostick’s zine, learn about her life, and see Alice’s blue plaque!


Embark on a captivating journey through overlooked local history with Empath Action CIC at their exclusive Breaking the Mould zine launch, dedicated to the extraordinary Alice Gostick.


This event is perfect for adults with a keen interest in history and influential local figures, and with their free zine making workshop it’s open for curious minds of all ages, so feel free to bring along the family.

  • Discover the untold stories of Alice’s remarkable life, delve into the trials and triumphs of those closest to her, and unravel the pivotal role she played in shaping world-renowned artistic talent like Henry Moore.

  • Be prepared for an exclusive behind-the-scenes exploration as Empath Action CIC’s play, Breaking the Mould, comes to life. Hear first hand from the writer and director, Steven Busfield, about the creative process that brought this compelling narrative to the stage.

  • Immerse yourself in a fascinating talk by history experts, shedding light on the extraordinary lives of Alice, her sister Constance, and the esteemed headmaster of Castleford Secondary School, Toddy Dawes.

  • As a special treat, local acting talents will perform excerpts from the words of Alice and Toddy, offering a unique and captivating experience for our audience.


Breaking the Mould is funded by Wakefield Council as part of Our Year – Wakefield District 2024, and is part of a wider project to celebrate and blue plaque the life of Alice Gostick.
