About

Join artist Lewis Hammond in conversation with exhibition curator Marie-Charlotte Carrier as they discuss the themes and ideas behind Hammond’s new body of paintings, developed specifically for The Hepworth Wakefield.

The exhibition, Crystal in the Shade, marks Hammond’s first museum presentation in the UK.

The talk will explore Hammond’s painting process, from his use of oil paint and layered surfaces to the mythological and contemporary references that shape his work, alongside wider themes of home, displacement and belonging.

This event will also launch a new publication, Lewis Hammond: Crystal in the Shade, published by The Hepworth Wakefield and edited by Carrier. It features writing by Julia Hori, University Associate Professor of Postcolonial and Caribbean Literatures in the Faculty of English, University of Cambridge; Kayo Chingonyi, the Zambian-British poet, musician, DJ and broadcaster; and Helen Turner, joint Artistic Director of E-Werk Luckenwalde, where the exhibition will travel to in late-2026.
