Using a phone torch or a torch borrowed from reception, join Sparky the canary as he explores the museum in our wintry self-guided story trail.

Santa Underground

This Christmas, before Santa goes down your chimney he is going down the mine! Travel 140m underground to join Santa in his unique and atmospheric underground grotto where he will be waiting to meet a few select children. Will the bell place you on the naughty or nice list? Good children will receive a present and certificate while naughty ones will get coal…


Maker’s Shed : Thrifty Christmas

In the lead up to Christmas get your home ready for Christmas with handmade wrapping paper and Christmas decorations. Then prepare for the new year by making your own calendar to enjoy throughout 2023


Caphouse Creators: Christmas Rag Rugged Wreaths


Sunday 4th December, 11am – 12pm & 2pm – 3pm | £5 per child


7-12 year olds are invited to get creative at our monthly club, learning new skills and practical techniques!

This month learn the age-old art of rag rugging by making a festive wreath using recycled fabrics.


Wacky Wednesday Christmas Special

Maurice the Miner has decorated the whole site but there is just one bare lonely tree left. Can you help decorate the tree and search for the brightest star to go on top of the Museum’s Christmas tree! Enjoy a festive morning of surprise guests, songs, rhymes, stories and crafts.


Caphouse Creators: Resin Holly Decorations


21st, 22nd, 23rd December 2022, 11am – 12pm | £5 per child


7-12 year olds are invited to get creative at our monthly club, learning new skills and practical techniques!

This month adorn your Christmas tree with handmade stained glass style resin ornaments in this festive hands-on workshop.


Heritage Walk: Clues in the Landscape


Thursday 29th December | 10am – 12pm


Enjoy a country walk? Fascinated by local heritage? Combine the two by joining our friendly guide in this 2-hour circular walk around the Museum (3 miles). Discover shadows of an industry hidden in the landscape as you explore the surviving architecture and families stories behind the Lister Kaye Line. Learn how the Lister Kaye family took a huge gamble on a new mineral line to take the coal to market, which was a feat of engineering to overcome the steep inclines and declines but ensured the growth of the family business and the building of new social ties between the local communities.
