About

Explore nature’s paint palette and make natural dyes sourced from Pontefract Castle‘s medieval herb garden!


Learn how woad and other plants from the medieval garden created colourful cloths, in this dyeing demonstration and workshop.


Watch as woad from the medieval herb garden is turned into a dye to make beautiful blues.


Learn what parts go together to make a dye and fix it. Test different natural dyes and cloths – what colours can you make?


Choose your favourite natural colour and make a unique headband or wristband.*


This workshop is designed for teenagers aged 12 to 16. Accompanying adults are welcome, but not essential.


* Wear something you don’t mind getting dye on!
