About

In 1826 Wakefield was the site of the first nature park anywhere in the world.

Inspired by the rainforests of South America and horrified by the destruction of the environment during the Industrial Revolution, Charles Waterton (1783 – 1865) turned his estate into a safe haven for wildlife.

Wakefield Museum curator and trustee of the Friends of Waterton’s Wall, John Whitaker, explores Waterton’s writing on the environment and the remains of the park at Walton Hall near Wakefield.

This event is linked to The Sleeping Tree – an immersive installation at WX Wakefield Exchange that explores themes of climate change and deforestation.
