Get hands-on with history this February Half Term with an action packed week of events and activities at the National Coal Mining Museum! Explore the great outdoors with nature backpacks, see mining stories come to life, get creative with free crafts and so much more.


Time Tunnel


Wed-Sun | £5.50 per child, £6.50 per adult, pre-booking advised


Be transported through the centuries as you are taken through almost 200 years of mining history thanks to state-of-the-art technology. Led by a former miner you will travel through time and discover the incredible stories of coal mining through the centuries.




Family Weaving Workshop


Wed 18, Thu 19, Fri 20 February, 11am-12:30pm | £10 per family (max 4 people), pre-bookable


Explore loom, circle, and stick weaving inspired by the beautifully woven seats and decorative emblems of the newly restored Voysey chairs and table, using tactile textiles to craft joyful creations for your living spaces.




Tales of Coal, Care and Community Life

Discover how welfare above ground gave miners and their families support, and a sense of belonging, through interactive storytelling.




Makers’ Shed


Wed 19-Sun 23 Feb, 11:30am-3:30pm | Free, drop-in at the Pony Discovery Centre


Have you spotted the stunning restored chairs in the gallery? They’ve inspired the half term Makers’ Shed, where you can try your hand at weaving in free craft activities. What wonderfully woven masterpiece will you make to take home? Let your imagination run wild!




Light Up Trail


Wed-Sun | Free, pick up at the Visitor Welcome Desk, The Hub


Explore the darkest corners of the Museum to discover the story of an adventurous pit pony.




Horsekeeper Talks


Wed-Sun | Free at Pony Discovery Centre

Visit Eric, Ernie, Finn and Al. Join a Horsekeeper talk at 12pm, then see what they are fed at 2:30pm.




Discovery Spots


Wed-Sun | Free, drop-in (volunteer dependant)


Look out for friendly volunteers across the site who will be running interactive activities throughout the day.




Tours: Pithead Baths


Wed-Sun, 12pm | Free, meet at Pithead Baths


Discover the daily routines of miners, from the start to the end of their day, in this fun family tour!
