Join Artists, the Lo-Fi Alchemists for Finding My Roots, a series of free seasonal, sensory and nature-based workshops that celebrate Wakefield’s rich botanical heritage and outdoor landscapes.
Discover traditional dyeing techniques inspired by medieval crafts, explore foraging, and transform natural and recycled materials into beautiful, simple and handcrafted artworks.
No experience needed and travel fare subsidies are available. All the materials will be provided but please bring your own should you wish.
Saturday 12 September, 11am-2pm
Explore the colours hidden within hedgerow as we forage berries to create dyes for silk and cotton threads, cotton fibres and upcycled cotton cloth before painting unique bookmarks with the dye along with other natural paint and pigments.
Saturday 19 September, 11am-2pm
Create a dyepot from Coreopsis flowers and discover the magic of cloth bundle dyeing. Using foraged plants and flowers, fleece, linen, silk and cotton, you’ll wrap and dye fabrics to reveal beautiful organic patterns and colours. The session also includes bookmark painting using handmade dyes and natural pigments.
Saturday 3 October, 11am-2pm
Learn how to create a natural dyepot from Buddleia before dyeing fabrics and fibres with the colours you make. Then weave with foraged materials including honeysuckle, clematis, ivy, grasses, twigs, wool and fleece, using willow frames to create your own unique nature-inspired artwork. Finish by decorating project bookmarks with handmade dyes and natural paints.
Finding My Roots is supported by Wakefield Council Culture Grants and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority as part of Nature Season and is designed for those 16+.
