This year, as part of Heritage Open Days, visit Holmfield Park Bowls Club.
As well as being one of Wakefield’s historic bowls clubs, they’re also home to a historical hidden gem – a set of Victorian whale bone gateposts! Originally believed to have been located at Kettlethorpe Hall, before being relocated to Sandal Castle, where they stood on Manygates Lane for many years, they were then moved to Holmfield Park, although it is not known when or why! Whatever the reason, they now stand at the entrance to the club.
Call in during the day to have a look, chat to the volunteers and maybe even have a go at bowling.
Holmfield Park Bowls Club is located only a short walk from Wakefield Thornes Bowls Club, who will also be open to visitors on the same day, so why not visit both?
