Introduction to Black and White Photography – Six-Week Course

The Art House

Date

Now - Wed 13 Jul 2022

Time

18:00 - 20:30

Price

£190.00 - £190.00

A step up from our Black and White Photography Crash Course, this six-week course takes you thoroughly from loading that first roll of film, to leaving with a series of beautifully refined silver gelatin prints.

Across the six weeks, you’ll learn how to confidently load your film and operate a manual 35mm camera on a group Photowalk. You’ll then learn how to process your film, touching on how to push and pull your development. Following this, you’ll spend the majority of your course gaining an in-depth knowledge of how to read a negative, contact print and refine a series of prints – learning how to critically look at your prints and explore dodging and burning.

You will be offered a 35mm camera (unless you prefer to use your own) and given one roll of 35mm film for the Photowalk. You’ll then continue to work from the photographs produced during the start of the course, whilst also being welcome to bring existing 120mm or 35mm negatives to print from.

Tutor: Niamh Donnelly.

Niamh is a Wakefield based, photographic artist working primarily with analogue photography. She holds a BA hons in Photography from Nottingham Trent University and has several years worth of experience in printing both on a personal, and commercial basis, as well as having worked as a lab technician at The Photo Parlour, Nottingham over the past year.

Who is the Workshop for?

This course suits those who are new to analogue photography or those who need a refresher. If you are totally new to darkroom processes and want to try a shorter workshop, we would suggest starting with our darkroom printing or processing ‘Taster Sessions’, before moving onto a more in-depth understanding on our ‘Intro to Black and White Photography’ and finally, when you feel like you have a piece of good basic knowledge, you arrive at ‘Daniel T Wheeler’s Darkroom Masterclass which is where you’ll leave feeling equipped with advanced extensive technical knowledge and made a series of refined silver gelatin prints.

Do I Need to Bring Anything?

Students must bring a roll of exposed and processed film, either 35mm or 120mm, to print from.

Additional Dates:

08 June, 15 June, 22 June, 29 June, 06 July and 13 July 2022. All 18:00 – 20:30.
