About

Love LEGO? Keen on coding? Build your own coal mine cart and learn how to make it move in this creative programming workshop. No experience required.

Step into the shoes of an engineer from the past at the National Coal Mining Museum. Design, build, and program a coal mine cart that can safely transport coal up and down a mine ramp using the power of modern technology!

Perfect for ages 8+, solve problems and challenge yourself with following tasks in this IzWiz Robotics workshop:

  • Build a fully automated coal mine cart using LEGO WeDo 2.0 to transport coal or other materials.

  • Program your cart to move up and down a ramp smoothly.

  • Design a mechanism that can unload the coal once it reaches the top.

  • Create an alert system using sounds or lights to indicate when the cart has safely reached the top or bottom of the ramp.

By the end of this challenge, you’ll have built a fully automated coal mine cart that mimics the early innovations in mining technology, all while learning the fundamentals of robotics, programming, and engineering.

(Please note children must be accompanied by an adult – adults do not need to book).
