About
Come and enjoy an illustrated talk on Pontefract’s famous Almshouses by noted local historian Eric Jackson.
‘Alms giving’ is the traditional expression for charitable relief.
Pontefract was once known as ‘The Kingdom of Alms’. This was because no fewer than ten almshouses were founded in the town by the end of the 18th century, and many additional endowments were also made in cash and kind.
Almshouses were actually called ‘hospitals’ in medieval times.
