About David Wilders

David Wilders was born in Castleford, 1960. He is one of seven children. His father was coal miner as was his forefathers dating back to the 1830s. David left school with several qualifications one being an O’ level in art. However there was no option to go to Art College. He began work at Fryston Colliery in August 1976. He trained as a mining craft apprentice, coal face worker and became a colliery Deputy in 1983. Fryston Colliery closed in 1986 and David moved to Riccall Colliery near Selby. It was there he suffered a life changing accident that resulted in him becoming a wheelchair user.

He took up art by attending a day class run at Pinderfields Hospital as rehabilitation. He then moved on to attending local evening and day classes for a number of years, before finding his way to the Yorkshire Art Circus in Glasshoughton in 1990. His work is greatly influenced from his underground memories and experiences in the coalmines. He has a strong theme of industrial landscape, mixing the northern landscapes of mines, factories, terrace housing, mills, and finding inspiration from his home town.
