16:00 - 21:00

Following last year’s success, Light Up will return this autumn (17 Nov – 5 Dec 2021), with buildings all across the District being lit up with bright colours to coincide with the start of the festive season. Look out for Light Up events happening in Wakefield, Castleford, Ossett, Overton, South Kirkby, Pontefract, Hemsworth and South Elmsall, including Christmas light switch-ons, festive markets, street entertainment, choirs and more.

This year, Light Up will also welcome partner activity across the District including Artwalk Wakefield featuring five new light themed workshops, the return of The Hepworth Wakefield’s Festive Mini Markets over three consecutive weekends, the launch of ‘Santa Underground” at the National Coal Mining Museum and the re-opening of the ‘Treasures of the Archive Service’ exhibition at West Yorkshire History Centre.

From 19-21 November, STILL, a spectacular “light artwork” and show-stopping combination of light and sound will be projected onto the exterior of Wakefield Cathedral. STILL is inspired by the idea of pilgrimage, and how the events of recent times have required many of us to take unplanned pilgrimages of personal discovery from the confines of our homes. The light projections will reveal a series of stunning images of colour and motion, accompanied by a newly created soundtrack. STILL will transform the iconic cathedral like never before and is produced by creative studio NOVAK, with musician and sound artist Ed Carter, lighting designer Phil Supple and featuring the Wakefield Cathedral Choir.

From 19-21 November, Light Up partners Wakefield BID, Trinity Walk and Wakefield Cathedral will host festive activities including choirs, fair rides, live music, face painting, Santa’s Grotto, lantern making workshops and much more.
