About

In Hemsworth, the library has become a central hub where folks of all ages gather. To make the space even more exciting, a new artwork was created to brighten up the building and spark some local pride!

Yorkshire artist Douglas Black worked with community groups who use our library, to co-create an exciting series of artworks that will brighten the outside of our library. He joined coffee mornings, knitting groups, history clubs, and youth meetups to hear from all sorts of people. He even walked with a local group to explore the area. Altogether, over 80 people got involved, helping shape the final designs through creative workshops and sharing what they love about Hemsworth.

Join us at this free event on Thursday 23 January as we unveil the artworks!

Lighting the Lanes showcases themes of nature, happiness, and community, with a nod to Hemsworth’s industrial past and hopes for the future.

This mural is part of the Our Year Crossings and Gateways programme, bringing public art communities across the Wakefield District.
