About
Join The Hepworth Wakefield for an in-conversation event between Manchester-based artist Louise Giovanelli and gallery curator Marie-Charlotte Carrier.
Together, they will discuss the making of Giovanelli’s exhibition, A Song of Ascents, exploring the meticulous painting techniques that define her practice and the subjects she chooses to depict—from film stills and staged photos to classical sculptures and architectural forms.
Giovanelli’s paintings are rich in textures and luminous in colours, often portraying fragile materials like fabrics and hair, which are notoriously difficult to render in oil paint. Her work creates a captivating dialogue between historical and contemporary imagery, blending references to Renaissance art with echoes of modern pop culture.
As Giovanelli notes, ‘A painting should be the beginning of something. The best paintings are those that endure in your mind – because there’s this sense of mystery to them.’
The conversation will be followed by a book signing.
