About

Join Pontefract Civic Society for a walk around the town centre starting from outside Pontefract Museum on Salter Row.

Pontefract grew into what we now today as the town centre from two hamlets, one to the east beyond the castle and the other from the west. The first market celebrated St Giles’ Fair in 1181, and three further market charters followed. Whilst buildings may have changed, some remain from later periods and the basic medieval street pattern broadly has stayed the same. You’ll see evidence of lengthy burgage plots and a number of yards.

Points of interest relevant to architecture, social interest, events and past commerce of the market town will all be included.

Walk-ins accepted, though pre-booking is helpful.

Please meet 5 minutes before start time.

Organised by Pontefract Civic Society.
