About
A social history walk ending in the sociable environment of The Old Grocers, which has its own history, even underground.
In the Victorian era, Pontefract was a true market town and many of the yards were filled with small manufacturing businesses. Amongst other trades and professions, the town had 6 liquorice boilers / dealers, 8 maltsters, 2 tallow chandlers, 56 butchers and a plethora of pubs (37 pubs and 3 beer-houses) – well it is Pontefract!
Join the Pontefract Civic Society and use your imagination to discover what town centre life was like in the late 19th century, starting and finishing at the Old Grocers, a building with its own unique history
This walk and the one ending at Cartners No. 5 has similar content on the walk, though with a different ending! Call in have a drink before we start or when we get back.
