Pontefract Choral Society are celebrating their 150th Anniversary with a concert in St Giles’ Church Pontefract.

They will be joined by Wakefield Festival Chorus; a children’s choir, a small orchestra, organ and jazz band.

The programme includes Vivaldi’s Gloria and FREEDOM – The Power of song, by award winning British composers, Alexander L’Estrange and Joanna Forbes L’Estrange.

The aim of the concert is to celebrate the society’s choral tradition with a well known classical work, whilst also inspiring a younger generation of singers and their audience, with a modern piece that celebrates the role communal singing has played throughout history, bringing people together in solidarity at times of upheaval and struggle.

The age range of our singers in the choirs will be 9 to 90! The society hope to have a new audience of parents and grandparents joining the loyal audience and in the words of Alexander L’Estrange “to bring the whole community together in a joyous and heart felt celebration of the power of song.”

As it says in the words of one of the songs that will be performed (written by the L’Estranges) “Singing heals, so lift your voice!”

Come and listen as they lift their voices in song.

Tickets can be purchased from choir members or from the Pontefract Choral Society website.

This event is supported by Wakefield Council Culture Grants as part of Our Year- Wakefield District 2024.
