About

Studio Vertigo’s stunning light sculpture Sentinel will illuminate the main hall of WX and is inspired by the mining heritage of the district.

Sentinel is a large-scale and immersive artwork by Studio Vertigo. Its sweeping curves are inspired by the protective wings of a canary, drawing on Wakefield’s renowned coal mining heritage. Canaries hold a special place in history here, having saved a great many lives by accompanying miners into the pit where a sudden halt to their singing would warn workers of deadly gases and the need to evacuate.

Studio Vertigo is a multidisciplinary design and fabrication studio led by artists Lucy McDonnell and Stephen Newby. They specialise in light installations and sculpture for international exhibition.

Sentinel will be accompanied by new artworks inspired by the light sculpture and its themes. One to One Development Trust have created a striking mixed-Reality projection and AR digital game available for all visitors to play on their own devices. A new playful interactive sound sculpture by artist Tony Wade, composer Andy Wright and the team at XPLOR, will invite visitor to move around space, playing the sounds as they move.
