Discover the remarkable story of Joe and Elizabeth, the generous benefactors behind Pontefract’s newest museum, The Elizabeth Love Museum. Though they lived modestly, with careers as a miner and a nurse, they shared a lifelong passion for history and heritage, dedicating their lives to collecting an extraordinary range of historic objects.
Their home, the former gatehouse to Pontefract Castle, became a treasure trove of local and national significance, housing collections including Castleford Pottery, fine Jacobean furniture and an impressive array of clocks, including examples by a renowned Pontefract clockmaker.
In an extraordinary act of generosity, Joe and Elizabeth left both their unique home and collection in trust to create a museum for the people of Pontefract and the surrounding area. Since opening in August 2025, the museum has welcomed visitors eager to explore its fascinating collections.
This special exhibition shines a light on the lives of Joe and Elizabeth themselves, sharing newly uncovered research, photographs and personal stories. Featuring oral histories from people who knew them, it offers a rare insight into the couple whose vision and generosity created this lasting legacy for future generations.
Please note that the museum is currently very difficult for anyone with mobility issues. There are several steep step areas and no lift between the three floors. There is street parking close and several car parks within a short walking distance.
