About
A one hour circular walk from Pontefract Bus Station, up Horsefair, Finkle Street, down Northgate, North Baileygate, then up The Booths, Castle Chain and Horsefair. The route is easy walking for those able bodied, though due to some narrow footpaths and the latter terrain by the castle, it is unsuitable for those with mobility issues.
‘Alms giving’ is the traditional expression for charitable relief. Pontefract was once known as ‘The Kingdom of Alms’. This was because no fewer than ten almshouses were founded in the town by the end of the 18th century, and many additional endowments were also made in cash and kind.
Almshouses were actually called ‘hospitals’ in medieval times.
Pre-booking required.
Organised by Pontefract Civic Society.
