About
Enjoy an hour long guided walk on a circular route around the locations of Pontefract’s famous Almshouses, led by noted local historian Eric Jackson.
‘Alms giving’ is the traditional expression for charitable relief.
Pontefract was once known as ‘The Kingdom of Alms’. This was because no fewer than ten almshouses were founded in the town by the end of the 18th century, and many additional endowments were also made in cash and kind. Almshouses were actually called ‘hospitals’ in medieval times.
Please note: You need to be fit and mobile, as you will encounter issues if you have accessibility needs.
If the tour is fully booked, Eric may allow for additional places. Meet on Horsefair outside Pontefract bus station.
