Wakefield Armed Forces Day is a day of celebration! It is a real opportunity for the people of the Wakefield District to come together to say a big thank you to our military personnel and their families, along with our Veterans and Cadet Forces.
Save the date for Wakefield Armed Forces Day: Saturday 17 June!
This hugely popular, free event will take place in the beautiful grounds of Pontefract Park and Race Course. The venue provides the perfect location for the Armed Forces to showcase their equipment and displays, and provides the public a great opportunity to meet the troops.
This is a family friendly event and really does offer something for everyone, whilst celebrating our Armed Forces. With free entry and free parking, we hope to see you there!
Here are just some of the highlights for Wakefield Armed Forces Day 2023:
- 10:30am – 4pm | Fireside K9 Police Dog trials run by Police Dog Handlers in the Top Field
- 10:50am | The Veterans’ Parade in the Arena (veterans, please gather at the arena by 10:40am)
- 1:30pm | Wings Parachute Display Team, a fabulous free fall parachute display in the sky, with a team made up of members and veterans of the Royal Air Force
- 2:30pm | Look up, look up! A World War 2 Spitfire Fly Past from The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight
- All Day | Civil War re-enactment group camp site display by the Sealed Knot Society, taking place on the Lower Field
- All Day | A large static display of radio-controlled aircraft with Pontefract and District Aeromodellers (PANDAS) on the Lower Field
- All Day | Chat to the 5 Towns Veteran Support Hub from Purston Park and find out about the support and camaraderie offered by the team
- All Day | Find out more about the Veterans’ Living History Museum and enjoy some paintballing fun on the Lower Field
- All Day | Craft market run by Forever After Collective
- All Day | Children’s rides and activities
There will also be military music from The Yorkshire Military Band, and Rhubarb Radio, will broadcast live from the event.

Entry and parking
Entry to Wakefield Armed Forces Day is free and there is no charge for parking. It is expected to be a busy day so please do try to car-share or use public transport where you can. This will minimise the impact on local traffic in and around Pontefract.
There is Blue Badge parking available. Please show your Blue Badge to parking staff.
