Back by popular demand - Wakefield's Historic Ghost Walk returns for Heritage Open Days!
Wakefield Civic Society President, Kevin Trickett MBE, will once again be taking to the streets to lead people on a tour exploring some of the city’s darker secrets .....
Ghosts not included!
If you think the ‘good old days’ were just that, these walks will encourage you to take off your rose-tinted glasses and explore some of the murkier aspects of Wakefield city centre's social history.
OK, we’re not promising any real ghosts on these walks, but it will be a chance to learn something of the characters who lived – and died – in 19th century Wakefield.
Hear stories about the miscreants, the malcontents and the plain misfortunates who eked out a living in Wakefield city centre during a time of social and economic change as Wakefield transformed itself from busy market town to Yorkshire’s third city.
Discover the history of Wakefield’s buildings, understand how the street layout developed and changed over time but, most importantly, learn about the sad fates that befell some of Wakefield’s local residents and how some of them literally got away with murder……
Meeting outside Wakefield Town Hall in Wood Street for a 6.15pm start, each walk will last around one and a half to two hours and will cover the area between Northgate and Westgate.
Part of Heritage Open Days.
