About

This World Poetry Day, let your inspiration loose! Join a poetry walk to celebrate the work of Cynthia Kenny. Get creative and discover a new side to Wakefield in this welcoming poetry workshop and walk.

After the success of their last Poetry Walk and Write, Wakefield Museum and Lindsey Marie from Black Horse Poets Society are back. Explore the Cynthia Kenny: A City Framed exhibition’s winter refresh, with new paintings on display.

To match the paintings, there will be a new route around the city centre. There will be new prompts to inspire you. The updated display will include stunning seasonal pieces like the one pictured – ‘Winter Morning, Landscape, Crofton’ (1979).

You’ll start at Wakefield Museum with a brief introduction before heading out on a walk around some of the places featured in the exhibition. At each stop you’ll be given creative prompts and encouragement to develop your own poetry and ideas. The walk will end back at Wakefield Museum. You’ll have the chance to share what you have written and listen to other people’s work.

If you’ve ever wanted to get creative with words, but not sure where to start, then this is the workshop for you!

Comments from the last Walk and Write Poetry Workshop:

“Really interesting mix of history and creativity. Hosts were both really knowledgeable and inspiring. Very enjoyable morning that will lead to more creativity! Thank you both so much.”

“Just wanted to say thanks again to you and Lindsey for putting on such a great event 🙂 it has re-awakened the poet inside me!”

Accessibility

The walk will take place in a moderate loop around Wakefield City Centre. Most of the route is level and we will be following pavements. Please be aware that the pavement can be narrow and uneven in some places. There is no seating available on this walk. The walk will take place outside so please be prepared. Dress for the weather and bring any water or food you may need.

If you have any questions around accessibility please get in touch at museumslearning@wakefield.gov.uk

This workshop is part of the public programme for Wakefield Museum’s latest Special Exhibition, Cynthia Kenny: A City Framed. Cynthia Kenny (1929 – 2021) captured the changing landscape of Wakefield with her paintbrush and pen. Spend some time in Cynthia’s Wakefield to admire iconic views and discover hidden gems.
