WX (Former Market Hall)

Welcome to day five of WordFest at WX!

Here’s what’s on:

Ocean Biome: Plastic Ocean – Witness the spectacle of an 18m-long, life-size sperm whale, a giant of our oceans, and meet the eccentric marine biologist, Netty Northwest and her friends, the sea creatures and their battle to survive in an ocean full of rubbish. They need your help to save the turtle and the whale from the ocean of rubbish.

Showtimes: 10:30am – 10:50am | 11:00am – 11:20am | 12:30pm – 12:50pm | 1:00pm – 1:40pm | 2:30pm – 2:50pm | 3:00pm – 3:20pm

Land Biome: Pivotal – Pivotal is an interactive art installation. The aim of Pivotal is to playfully acknowledge the relationships between people, and between people and nature; to make us aware of the sounds and natural environment around us, and our impact on those surroundings. Participants are invited to sit on the wooden seats and gently ‘seesaw’. As people interact with the artwork, air pumps are triggered, creating an airflow that pushes up through copper branches of the tree and through a flock of clay bird water whistles.

Showtimes: 10:00am – 4:00pm

Land Biome: Library Storytime – settle down and get cosy for an enchanting story in the enchanted forest.

Showtimes: 3:30-4:00pm

Air Biome: The Butterfly Effect by Tony Wade – a mesmerising aerial art installation consisting of thousands of hand-decorated paper butterflies which move in the slightest breeze and is an exploration and celebration of the positive steps everyone can take, individually and collectively, to reduce our carbon footprint and environmental impact.

Showtimes: 10:00am – 3:00pm

Stage Area: Hope Returns – Join StoryTrails for an interactive storytelling adventure, Hope Returns. Hope the boggle has enjoyed her adventures in the human world – especially in the libraries. Now it’s time to go home. There’s just one problem: litter is plugging up the magical gateway and Hope needs your help to unplug it. For ages 3-11 years.

Showtimes: 10:00am – 10:20am | 11:00pm – 11:20pm | 2:00pm – 2:20pm | 3:00pm – 3:20pm

Screen: The Lorax (U) – Twelve-year-old Ted (Zac Efron) lives in a place virtually devoid of nature; no flowers or trees grow in the town of Thneedville. Ted would very much like to win the heart of Audrey (Taylor Swift), the girl of his dreams, but to do this, he must find that which she most desires: a Truffula tree. To get it, Ted delves into the story of the Lorax (Danny DeVito), once the gruff guardian of the forest, and the Once-ler (Ed Helms), who let greed overtake his respect for nature.

Showtimes: 12:00pm – 2:30pm. The Lorax will be subtitled in English.

Market Hall: The Polar Bear (Is Dead) – Have you ever thought about what it means to lose something forever? Natalie and Daniele have made a silly show full of hope, about losing everything, being alone and going to Mars. It’s about all of those things, but essentially, it’s about the climate crisis. The Polar Bear (is Dead) is a new international collaboration between theatre makers Natalie Bellingham (Wakefield, UK) and Daniele Pennati (Milan, Italy), produced by SJ Watkinson (Birmingham, UK). They share a passion for contemporary performance and pies. Suitable for ages 14+. Click HERE to book.

Times: 4:30pm – 5:30pm* | 6:30pm – 7:30pm* | * These performances will be BSL interpreted by TOPP Language Services.

The Factory (Former Food Hall): Breathing Room by Anna Berry – a kinetic light installation in which a tunnel lined with cones ‘breathes’, creating a strange and otherworldly immersive experience. On the outside the beautiful and ornate mechanism is the focus of attention, whilst inside you travel through a luminous, gently moving tunnel, for an almost psychedelic experience. In association with Unlimited Arts.

Showtimes: 10:00am – 4:00pm

The Shed (Market Hall): Craft sessions, digital activities, story corner – there are loads of activities happening during the day, including finding out about recycling, things to make and do, games to play, stories to read and lots more!

Showtimes: 10:00am – 4:00pm

Food and drink will be available from 10am – 4pm under the canopy.
