What impressed visitors to Wakefield most in the past? Did they think it was a fine town surrounded by beautiful countryside, a cultured town where you could go to the theatre or the races, or a dirty town marred by industry?

Wakefield Historical Society member read and perform short extracts about life in Wakefield from a variety of different – and sometimes little-known – sources. These span the centuries from the establishment of the site of the town to the 21st Century city of Wakefield.

Discover a cosmopolitan city bursting with culture and bustling everyday life. Hear from business people, race goers, tourists and theatre goers capturing snapshots of Wakefield since the Domesday book.

Held in celebration of Wakefield Historical Society’s 100th anniversary. Supported by Theatre Royal Wakefield.

Tickets can be purchased on the door for £2 (Wakefield Historical Society members free).
