GREEN YOUR EXPERIENCE

Country Parks

The district’s country parks have almost 40 years’ of Green Flag accreditation between them! Anglers Country Park has had Green Flag status since 2008, Haw Park Wood has had Green Flag status since 2007, Pugneys Country Park since 2020 and Pontefract Park since 2022.

We’re pretty proud of our other parks and green spaces, too. With a district that’s almost 70% rural, they provide habitats for a wealth of wildlife, as well being spaces of peace and tranquility for humans.

The Hepworth Wakefield

Wakefield city’s renowned gallery has put in place many green policies. At The Hepworth Wakefield Gallery Cafe, all food is produced in-house by chefs who offer a sustainable and seasonal menu which highlights locally-sourced produce. Uses local suppliers to reduce carbon footprint. Since 2022, the café has weekly food waste collections through ReFood who process the food into Biogas for fuel and fertiliser.

The Hepworth Wakefield Garden has improved The Hepworth Wakefield’s biodiversity on site, offering rich pollen and nectar food sources for insects and birds.

Wakefield Museums and Castles

Wakefield Museums and Castles use sustainable materials in exhibitions as standard wherever possible. This includes fully recyclable graphic panels made from eco-friendly board and PVC-free vinyl with no chlorine or plasticisers.

Wakefield Museum‘s exhibition “A World of Good” won an International Green Apple Environment Award 2022 for Helping the Environment, and was also shortlisted for the Museums and Heritage Sustainable Project of the Year Award 2022, and shortlisted for the Museums Change Lives ‘Best Project’ 2021 Award.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) aims to reduce carbon emissions by 50% by 2030. It aims to increase the quality and range of habitats to encourage a higher level of biodiversity. There is a zero waste to landfill approach with recycling bins located around the Park. YSP uses plastic-free and compostable food packaging in their cafes and restaurants, and their shops stock locally sourced food suppliers and environmentally conscious retail products. They use low energy LED lighting in their buildings, have an electric vehicle charging point at The Weston, and use electric vehicles and bikes for staff to carry out day-to-day tasks around the Park. All their Visitor Centres and galleries all powered by renewable energy sources.
Above all, YSP practice careful management of their 500 acres of landscape to create rich and varied habitats for wildlife.
