10 Ways to Explore the UK’s Capital of Sculpture

Housing one of the most significant collections of Barbara Hepworth’s work anywhere in the world, The Hepworth Wakefield offers a fascinating insight into the life and creative practice of one of Britain’s most influential 20th-century artists. Featuring works gifted from Hepworth’s own estate, the collection allows visitors to trace her artistic journey, and the evolution of her career that helped shape modern British art. Wakefield’s events programme keeps the cultural calendar busy throughout the year. A highlight of 2026 is Hold to This Earth: Works by Contemporary Indigenous North American Artists from Tia Collection at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, showcasing sculpture, photography, painting, ceramics, film and fibre art. Visitors can also experience Light Up Wakefield, the district’s annual celebration of light, creativity and public art on Friday 13 November and Saturday 14 November.

Wakefield isn’t just celebrating artistic heritage; it’s helping shape the future of art. The Art House supports emerging artists through studios, residencies and exhibitions, while Yorkshire Sculpture Park’s annual Yorkshire Graduate Award highlights some of the region’s most exciting new talent. It’s a chance to spot the next big names before everyone else does.

Wakefield may be known for the Westgate Run, but there are plenty of other ways to enjoy a drink in the district. For something a little different, head to Forged Spirits at Tileyard North, where you can take part in an interactive workshop and learn how to blend your own gin or rum. Craft beer lovers are equally well catered for, with Ossett Brewery serving up award-winning ales and hosting events such as the annual Live at Ossett. If coffee is more your thing, stop by Haus Coffee & Plants for speciality drinks, alongside a carefully curated selection of plants and gifts. Alternatively, visit Recent Coffee Roasters to pick up expertly brewed coffee and fresh beans from around the world.

The landscapes that inspired artists for centuries still captivate visitors today. Take in views of Sandal Castle at Pugneys Country Park, explore woodland trails around Newmillerdam and Anglers Country Park, or enjoy the historic parkland of National Trust Nostell. It’s easy to see why artists such as J.M.W. Turner found inspiration here.
