50 Things To Do Before You're Five - Castleford Museum

Ever wondered what museums have for under 5s? Read on to explore a whole range of activities for young children available at Castleford Museum.

What is 50 Things to Do Before You’re Five? It’s a collection of no-cost or low-cost activities for families in Wakefield with young children. Explore lovely local ways to learn and grow together, while having fun! The 50 Things app explains each of the recommended activities and provides a guide to events and opportunities available locally. It is available to download for free on the Play Store and Apple Store.

At Castleford Museum you can discover the history of the local area together. From the Romans to pottery, photography to mining, there’s lots to excite and intrigue our littlest visitors. There’s also child-height easy access information and Makaton signs. These will help you communicate together about the amazing objects on display! The friendly museum team will always be on hand to support your visit.

NUMBER 4 – MAKE YOUR MARK

Pick up a Little Spotters trail and find a special selection of objects in the displays. Tick off each object as you find them!

NUMBER 6 – RHYME TIME

Join the team in term time for Toddler Tuesdays to explore the museum together. Toddler Tuesdays are every week during term time, 10am to 11am in the museum. The sessions are free and you don’t need to book.

How many rhymes can you sign or say together that link to objects on display in the museum? Here are some suggestions:

  • Heads, shoulders, knees and toes
  • Hey diddle diddle
  • I’m a little teapot
  • Round and round the garden
  • Ten green bottles

NUMBER 10 – SHARING STORIES

There is a selection of books by the Pick and Mix unit that you can read together during your visit. You can also visit Castleford Library on the ground floor of building for more children’s books to share together.

NUMBER 11 – MAKING CONNECTIONS

Explore the museum displays. How do the objects in the museum compare to things you have at home? Find the baskets with items for you to explore and play with.

NUMBER 15 – DRESSING UP

From clogs, jazzy jackets and becoming a Roman, what will you find to dress up and try on?

Find a special selection of activity sheets based on the displays. Or why not draw an object you like? Take you artwork home or talk to the staff to get your piece displayed in one of the colourful frames.

NUMBER 37 – SHOW AND TELL

Look around the museum to discover lots of objects from the past. There is Roman sandal, a miner’s hat and lots of plates, but what will you see? Chat about your favourite objects with the friendly staff.

NUMBER 39 – TALKING SIGNS

Keep an eye out for the Makaton signage around the museum. How many new words and signs can you learn on your visit?
