Our Heritage, Our Stories

During Our Year 2024, lots of great things happened for heritage in Wakefield!

At the beginning of the year we secured a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for the ‘Our Stories’ project, which has transformed how we work with heritage partners across the District. A new Wakefield Heritage Framework was adopted in May, supported by local partners, and throughout the year local groups came together to showcase the amazing work they do to research, promote and protect heritage and to celebrate some major heritage anniversaries for the district. Heritage Open Days was our busiest yet, with over 100 volunteers delivering activities to over 4000 visitors.

The Our Stories work will continue as part of the Our Year legacy, including the creation of a new heritage network and work to involve more people in sharing and celebrating the diverse and vibrant heritage that makes Wakefield what it is today.

Wakefield District Heritage Framework

We have developed a Heritage Framework for the Wakefield District which outlines our principles, themes and objectives for heritage. These themes and objectives will guide current and future heritage opportunities and projects.
