Eleven artists were selected to create artwork for the temporary hoardings surrounding Wakefield Exchange on Union Street in Wakefield City Centre, as part of Our Year 2024’s Crossings & Gateways programme.
These boards were on display during the refurbishment of the former market hall with the area attracting a high volume of pedestrians traveling between the main bus station and Trinity Walk shopping centre. Additionally, Union Street serves as a major route for public transportation.
The hoardings project created a temporary gallery of local and regional artists’ work, as well as showcasing the new creative hub. The artists were encouraged to use digital and new media in their designs to promote the creative spirit of the Wakefield Exchange building. We welcomed proposals from Wakefield and West Yorkshire artists and creatives, especially those with little or no experience of creating public artworks.
As of 2025, Wakefield Exchange is now the city’s new go-to destination for work, creativity, culture and leisure. You can view all of the temporary hoarding artwork on Creative Wakefield, on the Public Art page under Showcase
