About

The Mental Health Museum in Wakefield offers visitors the opportunity to discover and explore the history of mental health care from the early 19th century to the present day. The remarkable collection of objects and personal stories takes guests on a journey through time, providing a trip back to the West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum (later known as Stanley Royd Hospital) that once stood nearby.

The museum’s historical collection gives visitors a unique window into the past, offering glimpses into the lives and experiences of those who received care at this facility. The contemporary collection examines the evolving attitudes, treatments, and lived experiences of mental health in the modern world. These carefully preserved and intensely personal artefacts aim to promote wellbeing, challenge stigma, and engage in important discussions around mental health and social justice.

The museum is not just a place to view exhibits, but a platform for broader debates and conversations around the history of mental health care. The museum works closely with people who have accessed mental health services, as well as their carers, friends, family, and staff, to explore these complex histories and challenge preconceptions.

The goal is to establish this museum as a premier destination for learning about the history of mental health care in the UK. Visitors are invited to join in this important mission as the museum continues to expand its collections and programming.

Access to the museum is free, but a £2 donation to the museum charity is greatly appreciated.
