About
Pontefract has been a busy market town since the Middle Ages and it doesn’t look like changing anytime soon. The indoor and outdoor markets provide shoppers from far and wide with great choice and great value six days a week – and if that wasn’t enough to convince you to pay a visit, then the market’s location will be.
The outdoor market sits in the centre of the beautiful historic market town with traditional stalls running throughout the main shopping precinct. It’s overlooked by the Town Hall, the Grade II listed Market Hall, the Buttercross and Pontefract Museum; and from there it’s just a short walk to the wonderful Pontefract Castle.
For those more interested in filling their shopping bags, the market offers a variety of goods from traditional haberdashery, cobblers and clothing to more modern offerings such as eyebrow styling and vaping supplies. And as with any good market, the butchers and fruit and vegetable stalls take pride of place.
The indoor market currently has 100% permanent occupancy and the outdoor market has a strong mix of permanent and casual traders.
Top Tip
There’s a monthly foods, arts and craft market that runs from March through to December; and if you do come on a Friday be prepared as it’s produce only.
Interesting Fact
August 1st is Yorkshire Day and every year the whole town celebrates in style – and the market is the centre for much of the activity (and the best refreshments).
