About

In this, the 40th anniversary of the Miners Strike 1984-85, people across Wakefield , Yorkshire and wider, will welcome the opportunity to see this collection of historic mining trade union banners in Wakefield Cathedral, on loan from the National Union of Mineworkers.

Alongside the historic banners will be modern banners with current themes, from today’s workplaces, showing how communities of workers need to work together. Older members of former mining communities will welcome seeing the traditional banners. Younger visitors will see learn from these images, and messages on these works of art; they can compare with them with today’s banners and what they show of hopes for in the future.

The exhibition will launch with a Banner Blessing on April 29th at 1 pm, timed to coincide with International Workers Memorial Day, when we remember all those who suffer injury or death due to accidents at work.

The banners will remain in place for fortnight to allow for repeat visits.
