About
The Art House is proud to present the debut solo exhibition of artist Saroj Patel, whose work explores her contrasting and sometimes conflicting identities as a British Indian woman. Patel’s sculptures celebrate community, Indian culture and personal upbringing by drawing on cultural traditions. Growing up in the north of England surrounded by a large Indian community has inspired Patel to investigate the aesthetic and ritualistic allure of traditional Indian ceremonies.
Patel’s bold and colourful textile installations create a space that allows the artist to connect the visceral aspects of her identity with the joys and challenges of growing up as a second-generation British Indian woman. Her sculptures present stories that expand on ritualistic practices, myths, Indian astrology, migration, race, identity and gender.
To coincide with Interwoven, the artist will premier a brand-new sculpture, co-created with intergenerational local families and members of The Art House’s Studio of Sanctuary, supported by the HARIBO Happiness Together Fund – a collaborative partnership between Community Foundation Wakefield District, HARIBO and Prosper Wakefield.
