About

Discover the history and development of the great Yorkist castle at Sandal! Learn about its beginnings under the De Warenne Earls of Surrey. Find out about the Wars of the Roses and how Richard of York gave battle in vain at the Battle of Wakefield.

Wakefield Museums & Castles volunteers will take you on a fascinating journey through five hundred years of history on a guided walk and talk around the castle grounds. Learn about history where it happened, and dig deeper into the various theories concerning one of the most important battles of the Wars of the Roses.

This tour is part of Heritage Open Days and Our Year – Wakefield District 2024.

Please note that the majority of the tour of Sandal Castle takes place over level paths. However, there are some areas which include some uneven ground. At one point there is the option to follow the tour up approximately 50 wooden steps to the top of the keep. At this point the tour guides can split the group in two to provide a level route option. If you would prefer the level route option, please let the guides know and indicate when booking.
