About

Discover and explore the history of mental health care from the early 19th Century to the present day with a remarkable collection of objects and stories.

The museum’s historical collection provides a trip back in time to the West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum (later known as Stanley Royd Hospital) that once stood nearby; while its contemporary collection explores treatment, attitudes and lived experiences of mental health in the modern world. Intensely personal and carefully preserved, this place has a lot to recommend it.

Please note: currently access to the museum is by appointment only. Email museum@swyt.nhs.uk or call 01924 316360 to check availability. Please make sure you have a confirmed appointment before you travel.
