About

Join Wakefield Civic Society member Nichola Marsh as she reveals the history of Westgate on this guided walk of the area.

In 2020, the Upper Westgate Conservation Area in Wakefield city centre was designated a Heritage Action Zone as part of a project co-funded by Wakefield Council and Historic England. As part of the project, the Society published a book about the history of Westgate and the surrounding area.

This walk, which starts outside the Town Hall in Wood Street, will explain some of this fascinating history and highlight some of the historic architectural details to be found along one of Wakefield’s principal medieval streets.

As an added bonus, everyone taking part in the walk will be given a free copy of the Society’s book written by Kevin Trickett.

Please note if you are a wheelchair user that the walk is along streets in the city centre, some of which are narrow and uneven and have kerbs which may not always have crossing places.

The walk is one of Wakefield Civic Society’s Heritage Open Days events and is also a contribution to Our Year – Wakefield District 2024.
