From sowing rhubarb seeds to screen printing with rhubarb, this year’s Rhubarb Festival has a whole host of Fringe activity to enjoy!




RHUBARB FEST @ Wakefield Museum


Let’s Sow Rhubarb Seeds!


Friday | 10am – 12pm & 1pm – 3pm | Learning Zone | £2.50 per child 


Why is Wakefield always rooting for rhubarb? Find out in this new hands-on workshop, specially designed for your children and you to work and learn together. Get crafty painting your own plant pots. Create a special cover that ‘forces’ rhubarb to grow the Yorkshire way. You’ll also get some rhubarb seeds to sow and grow at home! This workshop is delivered in partnership with the Community and Family Learning Team at Wakefield Council’s Adult Education Service.

Come rain or shine, the library have fun rhubarb inspired crafts as part of Wakefield’s Rhubarb Festival. Pop in to see what you can create. All resources provided – and they’ll tidy up afterwards!

Rhubarb Festival Garden Gnome Activity


Saturday | 10.30am-12pm| Wakefield Library | Free


Drop in to Wakefield Library and take part in a gnome-grown craft activity to celebrate the Rhubarb Festival. Create your own mini-cress garden guarded by your very own personal gnome. Colour in your own gnome wooden garden stake and plant him and some cress seeds and watch your own mini-indoor garden spring into life in the depths of winter.

Walkersaurus Visits


Friday & Saturday | 11am-3pm | Wakefield City Centre \ Free


Trinity Walk’s dinos have a taste for rhubarb, so keep an eye out for the massive Walkersaurus Rex on the prowl around the city centre with her Trinity Animal Control Team handlers (for your safety) during the festival. She’ll be stalking prey for a sweet treat, but don’t be afraid and she’ll also be hunting for selfies. The babies may even make an appearance…

Discover the art of printmaking in this free, hands-on workshop where families can create stunning rhubarb-inspired artworks using inks made from rhubarb root! No booking is required, and our talented Maker Space artists will guide participants of all skill levels. Suggested ages 7+, children must be accompanied by an adult.


Printing Photographs with Rhubarb

Step into our Darkroom for an extraordinary free photography workshop! Learn how to develop photos using a sustainable developer made from rhubarb. Create your unique artwork and take home a piece of this unforgettable experience. Booking not required. Suggested ages 7+, children must be accompanied by an adult.

How Do You Eat Your Rhubarb?

Wool n Stuff’s window display will feature a collection of knitted and crocheted rhubarb-inspired dishes, showcasing the versatility of rhubarb. Explore the display and guess how many rhubarb dishes you can name. The person who identifies the most dishes will win a special rhubarb-themed prize!
