About

The Battle of Wakefield in December 1460 is one of the most important and unknown battles of the entire Wars of the Roses.

It took place close to Sandal Castle and features in Shakespeare’s Henry VI Part 3.

Find out about history where it happened on this engaging tour around Sandal Castle grounds.

Join the Wakefield Museums & Castles team to discover more about the numerous theories as to why Richard gave battle in vain. Did Shakespeare’s history plays really tell the truth of the Wars of the Roses? Or was he just a ‘mouthpiece’ for the Tudors?

This is part of #WordFest #MakeWordsCount and  Our Year – Wakefield District 2024

Please note that the majority of the tour takes place over level paths. However, there are some areas which include some uneven ground. At one point there is the option to follow the tour up approximately 50 wooden steps to the top of the keep. At this point the tour guides can split the group in two to provide a level route option. If you would prefer the level route option, please let the guides know and indicate when booking.
