About
Opened in 1894, the theatrical masterpiece that is Theatre Royal Wakefield was designed by Victorian architect Frank Matcham.
In his prolific career, Matcham built hundreds of theatres – but none are as intimate as his smallest, most special creation in the centre of our city.
On their two stages – the original 19th century Matcham Auditorium, and the newer Walker Studio – there’s something to excite and delight everyone, from the smallest to the tallest! They have shows for families, for fans of music, drama, comedy and more
Theatre Royal Wakefield’s Creative Director is John Godber, whose plays are performed across the world. The award-winning and BAFTA nominated writer has created modern classics including Bouncers, Teechers and Up ‘n’ Under, and has the distinction of being one of the most performed writers in the English language.
Theatre Royal Wakefield productions can also be seen touring throughout the UK.
